Minnesota 5th Congressional District Republican challenger John Nagel is alleging that Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar played a role in creating conditions that enabled the massive $1 billion Feeding Our Future fraud scandal, which was centered largely in Minneapolis and surrounding areas.
Nagel argues that legislation introduced by Omar during the COVID-19 pandemic weakened oversight and contributed to what has become one of the largest fraud cases in Minnesota history.
Allegations Tied to Pandemic-Era Legislation
According to Nagel, the origins of the scandal can be traced back to congressional action.
“Where did this actually start? She passed legislation,” Nagel said in remarks reported by Townhall. “Her legislation allowed people to get into Feeding Our Future.”
Nagel was referring to the Maintaining Essential Access to Lunch for Students Act (MEALS Act), which Omar introduced during pandemic-related school closures. The bill allowed states to distribute free meals through alternative methods such as grab-and-go programs and relaxed eligibility requirements to ensure children continued receiving food.
The legislation ultimately passed Congress with bipartisan support.
Geographic Concentration Raises Questions
Nagel emphasized that a large portion of the alleged fraud occurred within Omar’s congressional district.
“If you look at where the fraud is, it’s primarily her district,” Nagel said. “It’s really odd to think that all the fraud just happened in one particular area.”
Claims of Political and Financial Connections
Nagel further alleged that individuals connected to Omar’s political network financially benefited from the Feeding Our Future scheme. He claimed Omar held campaign events at Safari Restaurant, a business later linked to the fraud investigation, and had personal familiarity with one of its now-convicted owners.
He also alleged that a former Omar staffer was convicted in connection with the case.
“If you’re going to be in politics, you need to go through the people at Safari,” Nagel said, claiming the establishment held political influence and hosted campaign activity.
Campaign Donations Under Scrutiny
Nagel stated that several individuals convicted in the fraud case donated money to Omar’s campaign.
“Omar says that she gave the money back,” he said. “Public records show some money was returned, but there’s more that wasn’t reported.”
Nagel said the volume of connections raises serious concerns.
“There’s too much circumstantial evidence to believe she or her staff knew nothing,” he added.
Omar Responds to Fraud Concerns
Rep. Omar has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged or accused by law enforcement. Speaking last week, she attributed the fraud to weaknesses in emergency pandemic programs.
“A lot of the COVID programs were set up very quickly,” Omar said. “Many of the guardrails were not created.”
She emphasized that third-party organizations were often responsible for implementation.
Call for Leadership Change
Nagel said the scandal underscores the need for new leadership in Minnesota.
“We get rid of Ilhan Omar and put people in office who want to do the right thing,” he said. “You have to root out anyone who’s been letting things slide.”
No Criminal Charges Filed Against Omar
Despite the allegations, Ilhan Omar has not been charged, and no criminal case has been brought against her in connection with the Feeding Our Future investigation.
National Political Controversy
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions. Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump sharply criticized Omar and made inflammatory remarks about Somali immigrants during a public appearance. His comments drew widespread backlash and condemnation from civil rights groups and political leaders.
