Jeffries Signals Possible Legal Action Against Trump Officials if Democrats Regain Power

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Thursday suggested that a future Democratic-controlled Congress may pursue legal action against former Trump administration officials — a move critics say could amount to using government power against political rivals.

In an interview with MSNBC host Chris Hayes, Jeffries criticized the Supreme Court’s recent decision affirming broad presidential immunity for official acts, a ruling seen as a victory for former President Donald Trump.

However, Jeffries also indicated that many former Trump officials — particularly within the Department of Justice — could still face consequences, noting that the statute of limitations on potential misconduct remains in effect.

“There are so many corrupt sycophants within the Trump administration, including but not limited to, within the Department of Justice,” Jeffries said. “Now these people don’t have immunity, and the reality is, the statute of limitations is five years. And there will be accountability with the next administration if not before, when Democrats take back control of the House of Representatives.”

Jeffries’ remarks come at a time when the Justice Department is pursuing high-profile cases against several prominent Democratic figures.

Last month, former FBI Director James Comey was indicted for allegedly lying to Congress and obstructing justice. On Thursday, New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted on charges related to mortgage fraud.

Additionally, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) is reportedly under investigation by the DOJ for similar allegations involving mortgage fraud. These developments coincide with renewed scrutiny following whistleblower claims that Schiff authorized the release of classified information during the Trump-Russia investigation.

Declassified FBI interview reports obtained by Just the News detail allegations from a longtime intelligence officer — a registered Democrat — who served on the House Intelligence Committee. According to these documents, the whistleblower repeatedly warned the FBI beginning in 2017 that Schiff had leaked classified information in an effort to damage Trump politically.

The whistleblower claimed to have personally attended a staff meeting where Schiff allegedly stated that certain classified material would be leaked to implicate then-President Trump.

“In this meeting, SCHIFF stated the group would leak classified information which was derogatory to President of the United States DONALD J. TRUMP. SCHIFF stated the information would be used to indict President TRUMP,” an FBI interview report reads.

The staffer described the act as “unethical,” “illegal,” and even “treasonous,” but said he was told not to worry because Schiff believed he would be protected under the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause, which grants certain legal immunities to members of Congress for official duties.

FBI Director Kash Patel told Just the News that some officials have long used their positions to “selectively leak classified information to shape political narratives.”

“For years, certain officials used their positions to selectively leak classified information to shape political narratives,” Patel said.
