Melania Trump Draws Mixed Reactions for Unusual Greeting to Navy Sailors

Melania Trump and her husband, former President Donald Trump, made a rare joint appearance on Sunday at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia to mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy. While some attendees expressed frustration over the couple’s delayed arrival—Donald Trump began his speech more than an hour late—it was Melania’s brief greeting that sparked the most conversation online.

Dressed in a brown bomber jacket with a white “USA” cap—matching Donald Trump’s signature red MAGA hat—the former First Lady channeled a bit of a “Top Gun” vibe as she addressed the crowd. But it was her opening line that drew the most attention.

“Hooyah, Navy,” she said, borrowing a traditional cheer used among Navy personnel. The crowd offered polite applause, but an awkward pause followed, leading many online to comment on the moment.

Social media users quickly weighed in with mixed reactions. While some praised her for the attempt to connect with service members, others found the moment cringeworthy or inauthentic.

“Please make it stop,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another added, “Cringe,” while a third questioned, “Did her comms team tell her to say this to be relatable?”

One user sarcastically remarked, “Now she speaks Navy. She can add it to her list of languages,” referencing longstanding claims that Melania speaks six languages, though she rarely showcases them publicly.

Another comment read, “We are a goddamned sitcom,” with yet another writing, “Our country is being invaded by foreigners! ICE, we got one, quick!”—a clear jab at Melania’s immigrant background.

Despite the online reactions, Melania continued her speech by honoring Navy service members.

“It is an honor to be here,” she said. “Generations of sailors have kept America free because of your presence on the high seas. Your strength, bravery, and sacrifice inspire us all.”
